We thought we'd share some stories from our staff about some of their soccer experiences with Dakota Gold, Great Plains, Sioux Falls Soccer Association. These are first-hand accounts all the way back from 1994 up to and after the merger.
Gabe Wortman Academy Director
Were there any memorable games or moments you witnessed when you were coaching against any Sioux Falls team? "The only real story I have that I can remember was Hailey Fisher punting a ball into the goal when she was a u15 I think. They went to the championship and my u15 tristate went home. It was a crazy windy day, not super uncommon in this area."
What about any rivalries or intense games/events? "There was this time there was a bench clearing brawl during a men's league game in Sioux City. It eventually spilled into my warm up, but Steve B. didn’t notice, he just keep right on warming his team up. I don't think anyone got hurt just a big scuffle between the two sides."
How are things different now there is only the one club and you are now working for them? "I don't feel any thing is different coaching against them or with them. I do things in a similar fashion, just tweaked from experiences or meeting the modern game."
Frank Gurnick Competitive Director
His recollection of his encounter with Dakota Gold and Great Plains
"I moved to Des Moines in the summer of 1994. By the year 1995, I had met Daniel Ohayon and had a good grasp of the reach that Dakota Gold and Great Plains SC had in the upper Plains. My fondest memories were traveling to Sioux City as they had a fall event that was well attended by teams from ND, SD, Nebraska, MN, and Iowa. The competition was always top notch and there was a real respect for teams and coaches that transcended the matches. In 2005, I had an opportunity to come to Sioux Falls for a coaching course and it was great to see that of the 24 coaches in attendance 22 of the 24 were from Dakota Gold and Great Plains. Mike Mullins and Ryan Bier were two of the coaches taking that course and both are still active coaching for DASC and O’Gorman HS.
In my wildest dreams, I never would have imagined living in Sioux Falls let alone manage the local club. I do not regret the decision and in fact love the opportunity to be a part of the Sioux Falls soccer scene. The people of Sioux Falls are great people to be associated with on and off the field."
